Mangaluru:Jan,17,2016-Srimad Sudhindra Thirtha Swami, the 20th Pontiff of the Varanasi based Shree Kashi Math Samsthan passed away in the early hours of January 17 at Kashimath Haridwar at 1.10 am.
Sudhindra Thirta was born 31 March 1926, also referred to as Shri Sudhindra Thirtha Swamiji is the present legal and spiritual head (mathadipathi) of the Kashi Math and the twentieth successive person called the Swamiji of Guru Parampara.
Kashi Math Samsthan
Sudhindra Thirtha took the charge of Kashi Math Samsthan in 1949 after the samadhi of his guru in Kochi.[1] As per the tradition of the math, to continue the guruparampara, on 7 July 1989, Sudhindra Thirtha initiated a vatu into sanyasa to be the 21st, and called him Raghavendra Thirtha.[2] Due to internal strife he was removed from the position and all rights in the math, with effect from 19 July 2000. Later, to continue the tradition and guruparampara of the math, it was necessary to initiate a new Shishya.
Sudhindra Thirtha therefore initiated another vatu into sanyasa and named him as Samyamindra Thirtha on 20 June 2002 as the new successor.[3] Samyamindra Thirtha is the current main disciple (patta shishya) & successor (uttaradhikari) of Shri Kashi Math Samsthan. Sudhindra Thirtha has recently celebrated his 90th anniversary(Navathi) in April 2015.[4] Attained moksha on 17.01.2016 at Kashimath Haridwar at 1.10 am.
